THE PTUJ CELLAR
A Historical Outline
The history of viticulture in Ptuj and its surroundings has been formed through centuries by various institutions and individuals. To consider the beginnings of the wine cellar in Ptuj the first date to remember is definitely the year 1239 when the Minorite Monastery was established. The Minorites, as well as the Dominicans, acquired vast pieces of feudal land, especially in Haloze, and built first bigger cellars. So, the biggest preserved wine cellar still in use is in Ptuj in the Minorite Monastery. In the following centuries, the church and the Lords of Ptuj gradually lost the monopoly over the wine trade and were joined by numerous citizens.
