That which is made with love, effort and knowledge has a greater possibility to succeed. However, this is not possible without natural resources. Slovenian wines combine all of the above. Namely, the conditions for the growth and development of the vine are excellent in several parts of Slovenia. With regard to the climate, soil structure and relief, wine experts consider some Slovenian wine-growing areas to be the best in the world. Natural conditions for winemaking are good; however, this is only the first part of the 'magic' from which wine is produced. Naturally, several Slovenian winemakers also excel in this area.
80 to 100 million litres of wine are produced annually in Slovenia, which is, according to the amount of produced wine at the global level, an inconsiderable number. However, on a global scale, Slovenian wines are quite important, special and known for their quality and taste. Almost 70% of Slovenian wines fulfil the criteria for quality and premium wines, which is definitely a result of a highly-developed wine culture and demanding wine lovers.
Slovenian wines can easily convince and enchant the biggest connoisseurs. Slovenia has white and red wines, with lush or slight aromas and strong, full or light tastes. Slovenia primarily produces white wine (around 70%). According to sugar content, all categories are represented – from dry to sweet wines. You can taste various sweet wines, sparkling wines, pearly or liqueur wines. Even though the wines of all wine-growing regions are available at some of the better restaurants and inns, it is a special pleasure to get to know such wines in the their natural environment – in Slovenian wine-growing regions, their inns, agritourism locations and wine cellars.
Towards the East, Southeast and Southwest
Slovenia has three wine-growing regions. The wine-growing region of Podravje in the Eastern part of Slovenia is especially famous for its white wines. Mostly popular is the laški rizling, followed by chardonnay and sauvignon. These are the white varieties that are also produced in the Southeast of Slovenia, in the wine-growing region of Posavje, where red wines such as modra frankinja also play an important role. The wine-growing region of Primorska also has different internationally recognised wines as well as local and autochthonous varieties. The zelen and pinela from the wine-growing region ofVipavsko are worth mentioning. Teran, from the wine-growing region of Karst, is a specialty of this region.
Tasting of Slovenian wines is only the beginning of the exploration, since Slovenia has several excellent wine blends. Among them, it is worth mentioning the protected wine cviček from the wine-growing region of Dolenjska.
Wine has had a special social and sociable importance in Slovenia for centuries, since it is present during virtually all important events in people's lives. The culture of enjoying wine in moderate amounts has also become prevalent, while exaggerated drinking has become less socially acceptable. The 'exquisite drop', to which wine is frequently referred, must be enjoyed for good health, which can also be strengthened when a glass of wine is raised in good company and toast is exclaimed.
