The Drava is already a large river when it flows into Slovenia from Austria. Sadly, its 143-kilometre run across Slovenia is broken up by numerous hydropower plant dams. Such is the fish world. The predominant species are shoal white fish including nase, Danube roach and chub, as well as barbel and bream in the lower reaches of the Drava. The old Drava river below Maribor is excellent water for nase, as is Ptuj Lake. The most sought-after fish in the lakes are pike, pike-perch, wels and naturally also carp, which achieve record sizes.
