Slovene language summer schools

Summer is one of the best times of the year to visit Slovenia. Get to know the country while learning Slovene, one of the very few languages in the world to use the dual form alongside the singular and plural. Slovene is also an official language of the European Union. Interest in learning Slovene is growing all the time, with the result that more and more summer schools are available.

Most of the students are Slovenes living outside the borders of Slovenia, the descendants of Slovene emigrants and foreigners with a Slovene partner. Then there are those who are planning to live in or are already living in Slovenia. Summer schools are open to all who are interested in learning this beautiful and – according to many students – rather difficult language.

Principal organisers of summer schools

The Centre for Slovene as a Second/Foreign Language, which operates under the aegis of the Ljubljana University Faculty of Arts, organises two Slovene language summer schools each year – an adult summer school and a youth summer school. The latter is open to youngsters aged 14 to 17.

Candidates may apply for the scholarships which are awarded annually by the government.

The Faculty of Humanities in Koper and the Scientific Research Centre Koper organise an annual Slovene language summer course on the coast called Hello, This is the Slovene Mediterranean! The course is open to young people aged 15 and over.

The National Education Institute runs an annual summer school for children of Slovene descent who live abroad. It takes place in a different region of the country each year, giving participants the chance to discover the sights and characteristics of other parts of Slovenia.

The Univerzum Minerva educational development institute runs Slovene language courses.

Summer language courses are also offered by other organisers, mainly private language schools.
