In a triangle between the old riverbed of the Drava and Dravinja rivers, edged by Haloze and the Videm bank below the embankment of Lake Ptuj, lies the 125 hectares large remains of the riverside plain which, since 1979, has been preserved as Štrumovci Regional Park. The area is distinguished by the diversity of habitats found here, from gravelled pits, shallows, dead backwaters, and spring waters to mown and natural flood affected forests and meadows.
In this area we can find over 230 kinds of birds. Some species found here, for example the common sandpiper, little ringed plover, and kingfisher, which are bound to the river dynamics of the Drava and Dravinja, are interesting and at the same time severely endangered.
