According to the archaeological finds which date back to the Early Stone Age, to the metal ages, the Roman era and the Early Middle Ages, Solkan is considered to be one of the oldest settlements in the Valley of the River Soča. It was first mentioned as castle or as settlement with castle together with Gorica/Gorizia in the Emperor's document on 28th April 1001. The very name of the place originates in the pre-slavic era and has changed in history several times: Silikanum, Syliganum, Salcanum, Zelcanum etc., to the present day Solkan.
The characteristics of the place: the Solkan bridge (the old and the new one) the Basilica on Mt. Sveta Gora – the Holy Mountain; the Parish church of St. Stephen with its old centre of the village; the cemetery of the soldiers who perished during World War I;
the Mt. Sveta Gora Museum collection of the Isonzo front; paths, tracks, trenches and caverns on the slopes of Mt. Skalnica and Vodice, War memorial of World War I on Vodice; Mt. Sabotin with its characteristics; the River Soča/Isonzo – kayaking and fishing; Sports and recreation zone by the River Soča.
